HOLY THURSDAY

Holy Thursday commemorates the final night of Jesus' life, focusing on The Last Supper. The day is deeply significant for several reasons:

Institution of the Eucharist: During the Last Supper, Jesus blessed bread and wine, identifying them as his Body and Blood and therefore this is the founding moment of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Institution of the Priesthood: By commanding his apostles to "do this in memory of me," it established the Sacrament of Holy Orders.

The Mandatum (Commandment of Love): The name "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum (commandment), referring to Jesus’ instruction to his disciples to "love one another as I have loved you". This is tangibly expressed through the washing of the feet, a gesture of profound humility and service that is re-enacted in parishes throughout the world.

Mass of the Lord's Supper: The evening liturgy includes the washing of the feet and after Mass the altar is stripped to signify Jesus’ abandonment during his arrest.

Altar of Repose and Vigil: After Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is carried in a solemn procession to a temporary "Altar of Repose". The faithful are encouraged to spend time in Eucharistic adoration, mirroring the disciples' vigil with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
